South Horizon from Maemul island and the Bastion of Ceiling Mountain (매물도 천장산 명사해수욕장 장군봉 저구항 당금마을)

For the last Sunday of November, knowing that the ferry schedule will be more simple within the next 3 months , I chose to visit the island of Maemul from the port of Jeogu (South Geoje). The island has natural beauty and very good sea views while few people inhabit it. I had the feeling that the life there is not very easy. Most probably water might be a problem while the island could be affected by strong winds. Moreover its steep slopes and narrow paths render the usage of vehicles impossible. Nevertheless there are at least 2 golf cars for easier movement within the small village of Danggeum. On the island Camellias are in abundance and among pine and other trees you can find also Machilus. There is also one Machilus with an age of over 300 years that locals considered sacred. For hiking there are 4 different routes. I chose the longer one, the blue trail (Bada Bengnigil). After returning to Southern Geoje and seen from the boat the island of Seomaemuldo I went to ascend to the Ceiling Mountain (Cheonjangsan). This steep 278m height , forgotten mountain once had a very important role and probably is keeping hidden secrets and some legends. I had to ascend fast within the remaining daylight but once at the top, I saw the remnants of a Japanese Base (actually its bastion there resembles the bastion of Gadeok island) without having the time to explore further. Once, when the trees were smaller the top offered magnificent views of the area. Today you cannot see much but I guess that it is worth it if the local authorities make it accessible and conduct also research. Lastly, for closing the day I had a walk between Jeogu port and Myeongsa beach.

Hiking/Backpacking

1. Ferry to Maemuldo costs 27500KW (approx. 20Euros). Check the schedule first since less ferries will be available between December and February. Island can be reached from Geoje (Port of Jeogu in the South) or Tongyeong. Ferry from Geoje goes to the port of Danggeum in 30min, then in another 10min to the port of Daehang and then to the island of Somaemuldo within another 20min. Then the ferry goes back to Jeogu within 50min. It is fast when you approach Danggeum (30min) but when you want to return you travel for 80min. 2. Have some cash with you. 3. Maemuldo has some pensions but note that it is very popular due to the various available activities (fishing, diving, hiking etc) and beautiful views while several people do camping. 4. Although RAMBLR shows a long pause (some 3h 30min or more) the actual pause for me was less than an hour in total while the remaining time was travelling time (either by boat or car).
