Some locals swim in Aikerness Bay - but if you choose to swim in any Orkney waters, please be sure you check with the local swimmers first for safety tips. You can find groups of Orkney swimmers to ask for advice on Facebook. As always, the path may be muddy, and weather can change suddenly. Be prepared.

Aikerness Bay is a good place to start this walk, as there's a public toilet. You can walk a long way along the beach if you choose. The path I've marked starts on the old road, no longer open to traffic, and joins the one-lane road that cars take to reach the Iron Age village of the Broch of Gurness. You can stroll around and inside the village, imagiining what life must have been like in ancient times and enjoying the stunning landscape. See a video of this walk here: https://youtu.be/HUPgVQn0bS0
