Yosemite: Chilnualna Falls Backpack

This was a fun backpacking overnighter with Vaudesir, Antonyw, Calipidder, Barbara, Pavla, and Rob.This track represents only first day, which we estimated had a total elevation gain of perhaps 2700' (regardless of what the old Garmin thinks!)... My GPS was low on batteries on day 2 as I'd forgotten to charge them up, and I decided that I'd leave my other batteries in the camera, since the GPS wasn't really necessary. The hike back was mostly downhill and took about 2hrs if memory serves. My hike up was slowed after the top of Chilnualna Falls when we reached a creek crossing and my legs decided to cramp up badly after I hopped down from a log on a stream crossing. The 31lb pack and all the uphill really did a number on my leg muscles, since I've done only a couple of very mild hikes in the last couple of months. But we soon reached camp and the happily there were no more cramps during the trip. After the beautiful hike up, we camped alongside the river which was really roaring. The noise was wonderful to sleep to that night. I really liked the campsite location, and well, it's Yosemite, so pretty much everyplace is perfect.Photo locations are very approximate, since I placed them manually. A full selection of images can be found in my Facebook gallery. I'll also add a gallery of larger images on my site if I can just find the time. For a longer report, check out Antonyw's writeup for this trip at http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=666487All in all a very fun, beautiful backpacking weekend! Woohoo!

Hiking/Backpacking

There were patches of snow and the river wasn't crossable anywhere, at least as far as I saw, although had it been important to do so we probably could have figured something out. But the water was *cold*!Layering was important on this trip, since it was hot during the hike back (felt like 85-90F) and cold overnight. Some folks suffered more from the cold than I did but I was glad to have a warm fleece, beanie and gloves, particularly before the sun was on us in the morning. My three one-pint cans of Boddington's worked out well. :)
