Morning hike, just after sunrise. We started from the parking area just above Refugio De Juanar.
It had been hot and muggy the past week, but today there were thin clouds in the sky and at this higher altitude, it was chilly. Soon we were hiking up though and warmed up.
The trail to Cruz de Juanar follows the trail to La Concha to begin with, but then at the saddle between two peaks, it splits and we headed to the left. This is where the truly steep section begins. Some places we even had to use our hands for support.
Views from the top are amazing. Just as they were from La Concha. It is - after all - the same coast line you're looking at. To the south and in the far distance, we could see the tops of the mountains in Morocco. They were just visible between a marine layer and the cthin clouds in the sky.
I thought we would head down the same way we camy up, but it turned out that you can make this hike into a loop by heading down - an equally steep trail on - the other side of Cruz de Juanar.
On the way back, we passed by a viewpoint known as El Macho Montés. There is a statue of a mountain goat looking down on Marbella. This is a very popular spot for families and couples. Especially on Sundays it seems :-)
I marked this a moderately difficult, because most of the hike is that. The section up to Cruz de Juanar is difficult though. Not recommended for children and small dogs.
