Green Mountain Lookout

Very nice hike! The trail is in great shape, a little steep at times but not too bad. Various places with shade pause out of the sun. The views are fabulous. Approximately 26 miles off Hwy 530. The first 10 miles are on a paved road, the second 10 miles continue along the Suiattle River Road before turning off on the Green Mountain Road for the 6 mile climb up to the trailhead. The roads were in good condition. The trail starts off in the shade of the trees on a well groomed trail. The trail is a little steep in a couple places but not too bad. It then enters the meadow with switchbacks and some overgrown plants but the trail is still easy to follow and in great shape. There is some occasional shade on the way up which is nice on a hot sunny day. A little over half-way around 5300 ft the trail drip down into a valley with a small pond and stream. Some people were camped here and it looks like a great spot. From here you can see the lookout perched on the summit. The trail continues and winds around and up to the right where it meets the ridge line for the final push to the summit. Numerous people with dogs on the trail. Also some families with older (pre-teen) kids. Northwest Forest Pass required. Green Mountain Lookout, in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, has not been actively used for fire detection in many years, but one would not know it. The structure, a classic L-4, 14- by 14-ft ground house once common in the Pacific Northwest, has been lovingly restored by the Friends of Green Mountain. The organization is one of the original volunteer groups to come forward and help maintain a lookout.
