I've been having trouble placing the photos where they belong. My gps stopped tracking me so I tried merging the data with my "spot" but the spot tracks once every 10 minutes and is typically delayed by 5 minutes. That also probably accounts for the inaccurate trail length and elevation gain. This is definitely a good 8 miles round trip and feels like longer. And elevation gain is listed at 3300 ft. Great hike though, I was surprised at the number of people who backpack up there to camp below the lookout. Maybe they were hoping to spend the night in the lookout, but it is first come. If you want to stay in the lookout, avoid the weekends. I hiked up on a Sunday and it looked like Saturday had much more traffic. Even from the parking lot, on early Sunday morning there were cars parked down the road with a few empty spots in the parking lot. It was cloudy on my way up and I got some cloud breaks while at the Lookout. Well worth the hike.
The gable roof L-4 groundhouse lookout built by the U.S. Forest Service atop Hidden Lake Peak in 1931 was staffed until 1958 when many lookouts in the north Cascades were closed. In 1961 Dr. Fred Darvill and the Skagit Alpine Club obtained a special use permit to restore and maintain the scenic historic structure which is popular with hikers.
