Looking at the map you could be forgiven thinking we had been drinking before we got to the King William IV and their well kept TEA from Hogs Back Brewery but the truth was it was merely connecting unwalked tracks into a broad Box Hill area walk, with of course the pub stop in Mickleham.
It was uphill from the off and not long before we missed our intended track and also one of the party who'd stuck to the bridleway! Undeterred by undergrowth and tree roots we did meet up again and successfully completed the traverse of Norbury Park.
The tracks from there to the stepping stones at the foot of Box Hill were unremarkable apart from the number of fellow walkers, Duke of Edinburgh Award orienteers and dog walkers enjoying the pleasant May Bank Holiday weather, not forgetting the carpet of wild garlic after Westhumble to the Stepping Stones.
The ascent of Box Hill by the steps was lung busting and thigh aching but we were rewarded at the top with a vacant bench seat to eat sandwiches and admire the views. This time Box Hill seemed to be an attraction for all nationalities with countless foreign tongues heard as we toiled up the steps
The next 2.5 miles seemed to fly by must have had something to do with the approaching pub at Mickleham. Suitably rested and sated we made good time on the short leg back to Norbury Park car park.
