The aim of this weekend is to fill in a gap of 25 kilometres so that once I travel to the north in a few weeks I will finish the entire Heysen Trail. Bec came with me so we could test her new sleeping bag and our new 2 man tent. After Bec decided she would walk with me for a week between Melrose and Quorn we decided to upgrade our 2 man tent to a lighter version and our new Big Agnes worked well this weekend. Her new down sleeping bag also kept her toasty warm so success all round.
We started the day leaving a car in Kapunda and grabbing a lift to the exact place I had previously left the trail at the junction of Maryvale Creek Road and Marrabel road. The day was only going to be 12-13 kms long so we set off at a leisurely pace following farm tracks, dry weather roads and walking through paddocks. Bec does not like cows so walking through some of the cow paddocks was a challenge for her. But we finally left the cows behind and walked through paddocks planted with crops rather than grazing animals. The elevation profile for both these two days is pretty flat so we didn’t expect any big hills. It was a great day and I was really happy to be carrying a pack and following the Heysen trail signs on a new bit of track for me.
