In Laguna Beach for casual fresh good food I recommend: La Sirena Grill & Paradiso Gelato. I also ate at Laguna Coffee Co. which was average/good. In San Diego, Sushiya was pretty good and I would go back. In LA if you find yourself in Thousand Oaks, I loved Chocolatine French Cafe for breakfast/coffee. And if you find yourself in LA/culver city Simpang Asia would be somewere I'd go a lot too. I randomly tried Cha Cha Chicken in Santa Monica and it was OK/good. I like to check out these local places. I also had some bad experiences. Gen Kai sushi in Dana Point (how is there such a dive in the OC is beyond me) and The Taco Stand which is highly rated on Yelp in La Jolla was really not good at all. Avoid those two.

Got back from my trip to southern California and wanted to share a few of the places I liked the best and some really random food tips if you're in the area.
My top spots North to South:
Encinal Canyon Road from Thousand Oaks to Malibu & hwy 23 are both great canyon drives with cool views.
Zuma Beach - you can park on the road and the beach is close by.
The Getty Villa - it has interesting museum pieces besides the building itself.
Newport Beach Pier - there's no arcade stuff here, so it was nice to see seals, birds and so on.
Top of the world park in Laguna Beach had great 360 views.
Crystal Cove State Park - reef point. I would have done this coastal path and the beach if I had been able to walk.
The Strand Beach - clean beach with good sand. I would swim here.
Balboa Park in San Diego looks like so much to do you could spend a week just here.
Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego.
