Today dawned bright and sunny so I made sure to slather up on the old 50+ sunscreen prior to setting out. This gal burns as quick as a wink so I wanted to prevent that.
Setting off at 0800 as planned saw me walking happily down the Main Street of Georgetown briefly before turning left and heading down country lanes towards Hiskey’s Hut, a short 2.5km out of town. What a gorgeous little hut. I popped in to check it out and peruse the hut logbook which I always love reading.
The rest of the morning was spent following fence lines and paddocks of tall grass. Oh how I regret not packing my gaiters! I always expected to see a snake at any moment, especially with the warm day, and had trepidations walking through the grass. Thank goodness I have still yet to see a snake on trail.
After fence following was the dreaded road walking. My goodness it’s hard on the old feet. I had a deadline of reaching Crystal Brook at 2pm as that is when I had arranged to meet my dear friend Sarah, who was meeting me at the rotunda and driving me back to Spalding where I left the car.
The sun came out with minimal clouds so the road walking was warm going. The last leg to enter into CB was via the Goyder Highway - urgh! Nevertheless I arrived at the rotunda at 2:02pm! How’s that for accuracy?
Sarah was there waiting for me with a big smile, a coffee and fresh baklava. What a friend! She even hugged me even though I know I stank! We spent a while catching up while sitting in the shade at a picnic table. It was the perfect end to a wonderful week of hiking. I am so grateful to Sarah for helping me with my logistics. So I am very very close to commencing the Flinders Ranges section of the Heysen. I won’t get back on trail now until next year, so I have Melrose in my sights as the first destination of the 2023 season.
