Heysen Trail - Caroona Creek to Old Mt Bryan East School

What a cracker of a day this was. The sunrise was simply stunning, we were in the trail at 8am and feeling good. The scenery was just wonderful- wide open spaces with hills in the background initially. We gave each other a bit of space and hiked separately for about 45 minutes, adding to the feeling of total isolation. It was also interesting to see a trail marker noting that we were at the easternmost part of the Trail. Once we hit Tourilie Gorge things just got better and better. How spectacular that was. Walking through the gorge mainly, with some ups and downs throughout the morning also. We stopped for a bit of rest at Tourilie Hut, and soaked up the vistas feeling very happy. I would love to know more of the history of this hut. Lunch was spent sitting on a tarp in the gorge just feeling so lucky to be there and we didn’t see another soul all the day’s hike. Of course the gorge came to an end and we climbed up and over a hill to get to the road. More road walking! We didn’t mind so much now as it was leading us to our much anticipated hut for our last night’s accommodation and a chance to spread out and enjoy some relaxation time. We got to the old school at 2pm so we had plenty of time. We met some lovely guys who were spending the weekend up at the hut for a boys’ getaway, and they very generously provided us with firewood so we had a fabulous comfortable evening in front of the fire, and went to bed warm, relaxed, happy and looking forward to the challenge of climbing Mt Bryan
