얼음골 공영주차장에서 200m 직진하면 우측에 얼음골 입구 있음. 다리 건너 등산 시작. (우회전 하지 않고 호박소 방향으로 직진하면 케이블카가 있으니 능선까지 이용 가능.) 얼음골에서 천황산 능선까지는 오르막이 계속됨. 이후는 대체로 평탄. 재약산 하산 후 표충사 가는 계곡은 수량이 많아 멋진 폭포들이 있어 구경할 만함.
