I need to keep this real. Today's ride was tough and not because of the conditions. I felt a void and it wasn't temporary. Let's count the ways.
I had a wonderful morning with my friend and her family. Her (almost) four year old daughter who I spent the morning primarily playing with while secondarily conversing with her parents wanted to "trap" me so I couldn't leave. Awwwwww [heart melt]
Michigan campus is blowing up today hosting Air Force for a noon football game in the Big House. I should have went. Instead I popped into a local bar for the first half and lunch. So close and yet so far.
As such, I got a late start. It's discouraging to find my distance traveled so short late in the day. The sun going down earlier has become a new hurdle. Endless days are no more.
Oh, and it was pretty hot and humid today. That sapped me too.
In the end I didn't pull the plug as early as I wanted and pressed to Toledo where a lack of any camping options forced me into a cheap hotel (in a rather seedy area). This proved a rather crucial setup location for subsequent rides so very glad I didn't give up.
Not many days like today but more will stack up as the trip grows ever longer, the east coast grows dense and cold, wet weather kicks in as it must. It's all part of this game. And even if I do stop short, I have won this one.
