Decided to explore Goundry Hill State Forest yesterday. High heat and humidity days are the best to climb and bushwhack, said no one in their right mind.... I drove in on Guerin Rd and used a nice parking area before the gate (gate currently open but I knew I would be doing a loop. Headed south on the road then west on the FLT. The switchback reroute done about 15 years ago is holding up well.
The reliable stream at the Corbett Hollow turn-around was bone dry. Did find a hole down the road on the west side that had water. The minnows in it seemed to be keeping it clear of mosquitoes and it tasted fine after filtering.
On the return loop I took the Oneida horse trail, to the left of the stream. The trail follows the old Corbett Hollow roadway. The trail passes through a section of privately owned property and after clearing that I started up the hill, initially bushwhacking, then using some old logging roads when they suited my needs.
Ran into some long stretches of brambles. I was a little worried about startling a bear, but I figured my screams of pain were more than enough to warn them I was coming. I did partake of the ripening blackberries.
Felt pretty red in the face a couple times and reminded myself to slow down and drink more water. Looking at my recording track I stopped and rested about every 150' of climb. Got a couple of nice views on the way up.
