Didn't have a lot of time, but NEEDED a hike so I headed to one of my favorite locations in Rattlesnake Hill WMA. Headed up one of the old roads and looked at the school, house, and bard foundations.
Looped out to see the ponds up on top and they are nicely filled, though no ducks in sight. They may have flocked up and started their migration. After standing quietly for several minutes the frogs, insects, and song birds started coming alive.
Walked out into the old homestead area past the top of the hill. The yellow apple tree didn't appear to have any fruit left, but one of the reds still had a good amount of nice looking apples. I tried one and was pleased.
I really wanted to head up the next hill and take the long loop, but time was short. Planned on taking the trail down that comes out across from the lean-to, but after walking in to check out the ponds in the saddle I decided to just continue on down the hill bushwhacking. Hit one thick brushy section that I had to work my way through, but made my way over to the gully which I recalled was a little clearer.
Lost one of my orange handkerchiefs in the brush, but didn't go back. Maybe a reason to return soon and look for it.
2 cars in the parking lot across from Ebert Rd. Maybe hunters, hard to tell. With the leaves falling a large paper wasp nest was visible, but didn't see any activity. They may be winding down for the season, but I didn't poke it to see!
