North and Middle Chiwaukum mountains

This trip was organized by King County Mountaineering Meetup Group. Chiwaukum Mountain is located in the central part of the Washington Cascades, east of Stevens Pass and right off US Hwy 2. The mountain doesn't get much attention except for in the extreme hiking community. Climbing two Chiwaukum Mountain summits in one day is not an easy objective. The climb is off trail and contains over 5,800ft total elevation gain. I was lucky to be part of a strong team assembled by Brandon, the event organizer, for a Saturday summit attempt. This trip turned out to be my best winter hike. Perfect weather, a legendary crew, and magnificent mountain views combined into an unforgettable experience. We ventured into the snow and ice covered treacherous mountain terrain and were awarded with a photographer’s paradise. We even encountered Brocken Spectre(布罗肯奇景), a very rare optical phenomenon! While the natural beauty of the Cascades was incredible, the joy of climbing and the camaraderie developed among hikers was truly special. This trip serves as a unique reminder of why I journey into the mountains. Trip Overview: 2-mile and 600ft gain on White Pine Rd and White Pine Creek trail -- snowshoeing 2-mile and 3,300ft gain along a steep north-west ridge -- bushwhacking on snowshoes 0.8-mile and 1,000ft gain along the horseshoe shaped ridge to the 7,132ft North Chiwaukum summit -- snowshoeing 0.8-mile and 580ft gain along the avalanche prone ridge leading to the 7,423ft Middle Chiwaukum summit -- snowshoeing and then climbing on crampons with Ice axe
