Heysen Trail - Day 50 Mayo Hut to Hawker

I was not looking forward to many kilometres of creek bed walking today along the very wide Wilochra creek. At first I was walking along the creek bed but it was very rocky and difficult to walk along so I decided it would be easier and smoother to walk along the top of the bank. This also had the added advantage that I would be able to see the reassuring red arrows of the Heysen signs. I think this was the easier way but it did mean that I had the added issue of climbing down and back up the tributaries that feed into the creek when there is water flowing. Whilst wandering along the side of the creek I did see 3 random cows and 5 sheep who were a long way from any farm. I was very happy to get to where I had to leave the creek and finally get to my first sealed road. I had always planned to walk straight into Hawker and have a zero day tomorrow and so I knew I would have a boring 5km road walk into town. What actually happened was that I put my earphones in, started listening to my audiobook and pushed on and before I knew it I was only a kilometre from Hawker. After a quick coffee and pie stop at Flinders Foods I checked in to the Hawker Hotel Motel and booked a table for dinner. Looking forward to a rest day tomorrow and clean clothes once I have been to the laundry.
