NY: Mohonk Preserve – Bonticou Crag & Table Rock

Broken clouds, 50°F, Feels like 49°F, Humidity 91%, Wind 6mph from W - by Klimat.app Felix successfully scrambled up Bonticou Crag with minimal help from Victoria and I overcoming his fear and intimidation confronting the piles of large boulders, and daddy could not have been more proud! He almost gave up and came inside of the Deuter carrier bag half way through the scramble, but conveniently or inconveniently, I couldn’t not get through the tight lemon squeeze carrying Felix on my back and ended up retreating a few steps down to let him out of the bag on the stable ground. We literally had to carry the Deuter carrier pack up a few rocks up ahead and help Felix from above and below to overcome the largest boulder, which was at least 12 feet in length. Felt little sorry for the group of Polish hikers behind us, but they were very patient with us. Not sure if it was due to the 4.5-mile hike Felix did yesterday at Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in NJ or the unusually early start of the day, but he didn’t hike or trail-run as much as I had hoped he would. I thought I might have to carry him just to scramble Bonticou Crag, but he would hike or run through the rest on his own. In reality, to my surprise, I ended up having to carry him a good chunk of the rest of the non-technical section throughout the day. Oh well,… it wasn’t quite the reason I carried the Deuter bag, but he knows the easy way out by now! Peak of fall foliage is still 1~2 weeks ahead in Mohonk and Minnewaska region. In other words, Hudson Valley may not see the peak of foliage until later in October or even the first week of November unless the temperature suddenly drops. Southern Harriman to NJ Highlands might not peak until the first or second week of November in my forecast. Seems like foliage is getting pushed back by half a week in average every year for the last five years. I’m afraid soon we would have conflicts between peak foliage and Thanksgiving in NYC and its vicinity. Addendum: There are lots and lots of mushrooms this year compared to the last few years. We observed witch's butter, flat crep, oysters, puffballs literally all over the forest. Was not confident enough if they were edible and decided not to take them home.
